Sivananda Yoga: Get to know its wonderful philosophy

Sivananda Yoga is a classic, holistic approach to Hatha Yoga, based on stretching and toning the entire body.

Today, there are many branches of yoga and there is also variety in the way each is practiced.

However, the main character this time will be none other than the Sivananda Yoga.

Although the years have passed, the form of this yoga has not changed in any way. The principles have been preserved as they were from the beginning, and today it is practised as it was in the past, as established by Swami Sivanada in 1936.

It should be noted that Sivananda Yoga is practised worldwide and its form does not change in any country.

Sivananda Yoga is a way of complete healing and was designed to contribute to the preservation and, in some cases, the improvement of the health of the body.

This branch of yoga was developed by Vishnu-Devananda. He was responsible for writing one of the most important books on Yoga in recent times, called ‘The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga’, which was first published in 1960, and although some decades have passed, it is still considered one of the best books to introduce the world of yoga.

The way in which the Sivananda Yoga is taught is based on relaxation with an emphasis on breathing.

What is Sivananda Yoga all about?

It is an excellent form of yoga for those who wish to practise a discipline that is shaped by both physical and devotional factors. The chants and of course the movements on a physical level are present in every session.

In addition, each session of this type of yoga is made up of a total of 12 asanas, which were designed to achieve the stimulation of the chakras, as well as 2 exercises involving breathing and 1 that is based on deep relaxation at the end of the session.

It should be noted that practicing Sivananda Yoga is very beneficial for people, since it allows to preserve the welfare both physical, mental and spiritual, also helps to slow the aging process and reduce the risk of developing diseases, so the Sivananda Yoga provides a system with which you can heal completely and have an excellent health.

The Sivananda Yoga is recommended for those who do not have much knowledge about Yoga or for those who are just starting in this world, this is because it is an excellent type of Yoga to condition and adapt to the realization of each asana and also allows them to understand each of these in depth.

A remarkable feature of this yoga is that it focuses technically on the way each posture is aligned, and also focuses considerably on the chanting and the way you breathe, compared to other types of yoga.

The principles of Sivananda Yoga

From a philosophical point of view, Sivananda Yoga is classified into 5 principles, which are as follows:

– Physical exercise: Asana.

– Relaxation: Savasana

– Breathing: Panayama

– Food: Generally vegetarian It is suggested to implement a yogi diet where sattvic foods are present, among them are fruits, milk and its derivatives, cereals, vegetables, nuts, legumes, honey, olive oil and water.

– Meditation and positive thinking: Dhyana and Vedanta.

Sivananda Yoga Session

The Sivananda Yoga session is performed in the same way all over the world, with 12 basic postures that are intended to strengthen, improve flexibility, breathe properly and make meditation easier.

This sequence of 12 postures is called Rishikesh, and the reason for this name is that it originated in the Himalayas.

In addition, each Sivananda Yoga class also consists of 2 breathing exercises and 1 exercise in which the person relaxes deeply.

The characteristics of every Sivananda Yoga practice are as follows:

– Chanting/mantras at the beginning and end of each yoga session

– Long-term retention of each posture performed

– Breathing techniques at the beginning and end of the session

– Knowing in a generalised way and focusing on the way one breathes.

In addition, each Sivananda Yoga session lasts approximately 90 minutes and the typical system can be carried out flexibly, so the instructor is able to make modifications.

With the Sivananda  practice, symmetry can be established on the physical level and mental stability can also be guaranteed, since the asanas were designed especially for this purpose.

The performance of each asana must follow the same sequence in all classes, and between each posture there must be a relaxation asana.

As the practitioners of yoga increase their skills, the instructor can increase the degree of difficulty of the postures to be performed. The instructor can also observe how each practitioner progresses and can help them perform the postures.

Aim of the Sivananda Yoga

Through the practice of Sivananda , the aim is to tone and strengthen the various muscles of the human body.

The main objective of each session of this yoga modality is to instruct each student in the appropriate way to perform each yoga posture, so that they can deepen their knowledge in each session.

When the practitioners complete each yoga session, they feel calm and relaxed and even consider the Sivananda Yoga to be rejuvenating.
